6 Things to Do in Downtown Beaufort

Six can't-miss things to do in downtown Beaufort, SC — waterfront swings, Bay Street shops, carriage tours, historic homes & landmarks, and a Beaufort River sunset.

"No matter where you're from, where you've been or where you're going, Beaufort feels like home." That's Southern Living, not us — but give Bay Street an afternoon and you'll feel it too. Thirty minutes up the road from Fripp sits the Lowcountry's happiest town: walkable, waterfront, and full of ways to have a great day. Here's the hit list.

1. Claim a Swing at the Waterfront Park

The whole downtown faces the river, and the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park is its front porch — big breezy swings facing the water, a sprawling green lawn, and the kind of view that rearranges your afternoon plans on the spot. Grab a swing, watch the boats go by, and let lunch wait. It can wait.

2. Wander Bay Street's Shops

Bay Street is main-street shopping the way it's supposed to be — independent bookshops, galleries, outfitters, and boutiques run by people who actually live here. No chains, no filler, just one charming storefront after another along the water. Give it a lazy hour and see if you can leave empty-handed. (You can't.)

And if it's Friday through Sunday, grab an official Social District cup and sip as you shop — here's how it works.

3. Take a Carriage Tour of the Historic District

Sure, it's a little touristy — and you'll be so glad you did it! The guides know which antebellum mansion starred in which movie, who lived behind which porch, and four centuries of stories soaked into these moss-draped streets. Six blocks, 55 minutes, zero walking required. Two companies run the narrated tours from Bay Street: Southurn Rose Buggy Tours (1002 Bay St) and Sea Island Carriage Company (930 Bay St).

4. Walk the Historic Homes

Beaufort's historic district is one of the best-preserved in the South, and it's a pure joy to wander — antebellum mansions with double porches, tabby walls, gardens spilling over iron fences, all shaded by giant moss-draped live oaks. Stroll The Point neighborhood or just follow the prettiest street you see. Every block has a plaque, a porch, and a story worth stopping for.

A quick word on Pat Conroy, since his name is all over this town: he was the bestselling author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini (1945–2016), and Beaufort was his muse — he lived and wrote here, and the town runs through his books. Now the plaques and landmarks will make sense!

5. Catch Sunset Over the Beaufort River

End the day back at the waterfront and watch the sun melt into the marsh across the river. The light here puts on a show — gold on the water, pink in the clouds, the whole town glowing at once. Bring someone you like. This is the good stuff.

6. Eat Dinner on Bay Street

Here's the happy secret nobody told you: downtown Beaufort punches way above its weight at the table. Fresh-caught Lowcountry seafood, shrimp and grits done right, waterfront tables with the boats drifting past while you eat. Come hungry — picking a spot is the hardest decision you'll make all day, and it's a great problem to have. Don't forget to check out our guide to the local restaurants in advance!

Beaufort is the town most Fripp visitors drive straight through, and that's exactly backwards. Give it half a day at minimum. Fair warning: you'll be browsing real estate listings before you leave!
